National Fitness Day 2022 – Pungra Mega Class (Draft)

What is the mega class?

It is a “mega” group exercise to music class taking place on National Fitness Day. We expect up to 80 people; from beginners to experienced, from young to older; to exercise collectively to Punjabi music, for up to one and a half hours lead by Ravi Sandhu. Have you never tried group exercise to Punjabi music before? This is the perfect time to give it a go, and meet others.

How much will it cost?

It’s free but booking is required to ensure it is not over subscribed for health and safety reasons. Once all the spaces are booked, no other people will be allowed to book. If you book for free, and then don’t show up, it means someone else will have lost out. For this reason each person is required to pay a £5 fee, that will be refunded as long as you attend.

Can I book through bank transfer or Revolut?

Yes, Ravi will accept bank transfer or Revolut. No cash, before or on the day will be accepted.

Now I know about the event, what would happen if I just show up on the day?

If the event is expected to be full based on the number of bookings, you will not be allowed entry. You will have wasted your time, and no one wants to do that, right?

What can I expect to happen on the day?

The Mega Class will take place in the theatre at Alec Reed Academy. From 6:30PM to 7:00PM you will be greeted by a Pungra volunteer. They will record that you attended, so that you will have your booking fee refunded. We’ll start at 7PM (hopefully on time, please keep in mind it’s the first time we’re doing this at this location with a new team).

  • 7:00PM to 7:15PM will be warm up
  • 7:15PM to 8:20PM we’ll be exercise (dance based exercises) to Punjabi music, some oldies, mostly new.
  • 8:20PM to 8:30PM we’ll cool down and stretch.

What if I arrive late?

Please join the workout without disrupting others. If you have arrived more than 10 minutes late please do not take part in the movement to the full level of intensity; instead allow your muscles to warm up for 10 minutes by doing the movement to a low to moderate level.

No health conditions

You agree to only participate in the class if you have none of these:

  1. A heart condition or can only take part in a medically supervised activity.
  2. Pain, dizziness, faintness or unconsciousness, brought on by physical activity.
  3. Bone, joint, blood pressure, heart or similar conditions that  can be aggravated by physical activity.
  4. Asthma, diabetes, epilepsy or other conditions that make it important for you not to take part in high-intensity exercise.

What should I wear?

Trainers with good sole cushioning, such as those used for running.

  • Sports gear such as shorts, leggings or other bottoms suitable for running and other full range movement.*

Anyone wearing the following will not be able to participate:

  • Traditional or ethnic clothing.
  • Footwear not suitable for high energy movement such as smart shoes, high heels, flip flops, sandals.
  • Socks or bare feet.

Who is this event suitable for?

The event is for you if you are:

  • between 12 and 60 years of age.
  • well enough to participate in moderate intensity movement.
  • not pregnant or have given birth in the last 3 months.It is not suitable for anyone with health conditions that are aggravated by exercise. If you’re uncertain please seek advice from your medical practitioner.

Will it be one and a half hours of constant moving?

There will be a few seconds between tracks which will provide ample opportunity to get some water. The spirit of the event is as much movement as possible for the entire duration, keeping breaks quite short. No one will be pressured into constantly moving and as long as it is not disruptive to other participants, longer breaks will be welcomed.

Can I do any preparation?

It’s not vital, but it’s a great idea to practise exercising with our videos before the Mega Class. Load YouTube on you living room TV and search Pungra.

What music will be played?

Check out and follow our Spotify playlists. These will constantly be adjusted as some new Punjabi music becomes available. In the meantime, they give you a good idea of most of the music you can expect.

Can I come to watch? Or take part and have someone along to watch?

No, this is not a spectator event (it’s not a show or a performance). It is an interactive event in which all are to take part.

Can I park my car on-site?

There is a car park at the academy.

What should I bring to the event?

It’s a good idea to bring a bottle of water.

Will this type of event happen again?

Yes, we intend to do the same type of event every April and September.

Have we done this event before?

We did one in 2016 at Greenford High School in Southall. This is the first one since, because you know ‘life got in the way’. Here’s a video to show the event from 2016, come and help us make 2022 another great class like this.
