Notes and Further Reading

This book draws on published sources, which I have tried to represent fairly and flag where they disagree. Facts about history, instruments and the British scene are drawn largely from encyclopaedic overviews of bhangra as a dance and as music, together with the BBC's history of British Asian music and the published biographies of artists such as Alaap, Heera, Apna Sangeet and Panjabi MC. Readers who want to go deeper should consult:

  • Peter Manuel's writing on popular music in India and the diaspora.
  • Academic and archive work on Punjabi folk dance and on partition.
  • Interviews and biographies of the British bhangra pioneers, many of which can be found through the BBC and in the community press.
  • The Pungra website, pungra.fit, for the courses and resources that accompany this book.

Where a claim in this book matters to you, check it against a source and tell me if I have got it wrong. Corrections will be welcomed and made in future editions.
