Before you teach
A lesson from radio
Sunrise Radio began as Sina Radio, broadcasting from Southall from 1984. Wikipedia reports that Sina was a pirate station until 1988, and that it was awarded a licence and launched officially as Sunrise Radio on 5 November 1989, described as the first 24-hour radio station in the UK for the Asian audience. The station’s own website tells its early story differently, so treat “pirate” as how it is commonly reported. Sources: Wikipedia, Sunrise Radio.
Many classes start the same way: informally, with passion and an audience first. Going legal is how they grow. A qualification, insurance and a music licence open doors to venues, partners and endorsement, and they protect your participants and the artists you play.
Start with the two courses
This course builds on Introduction to Dance-Fitness and Dance-Fitness to Punjabi Music. They are recommended, not required, but they explain why Pungra is exercise and not performance, and what the music and culture are.
What you need before you teach
- A Level 2 Exercise To Music qualification, or an equivalent. Why this matters.
- Personal liability insurance, so you and your participants are protected.
- A music licence covering the music you play in class.
Insurance and a music licence are both required before you teach.
Why these matter
An Exercise To Music Level 2 qualification shows you can plan and lead exercise safely. Insurance protects everyone if something goes wrong. A music licence matters because Pungra is built on Punjabi music, and music played in a class is licensed separately from music you listen to at home.
